The Barni’s Lucky Day

Sunday, October 11th, 2009

Tour Guide Rob Bamkin says – Recently I met some of the Jarlmadangah boys at Willare Roadhouse on my way home from a camping trip. They told me they were shooting a doco with National Geographic on the Saw Fish program and were en-route to the Barrage which is a fresh water dam on the Fitzroy River North East of Broome. Canny said to me ‘ wanna see a big Barni” (goanna). He then pulled a bag out from in the back of their troopy (Australian slang for large 4WD) and slowly dragged this goanna out. He told me he was keeping it for dinner, but I found out later that when they arrived at the Barrage the people they were with had already cooked up a big BBQ so Canny was no longer hungry.

Lucky for the lizard as Canny then let it go!

Nature Conservation through ecotourism

Friday, October 9th, 2009

KDAT’s ecotourism site previously in the heart of cattle country is now being conserved to protect nature.  KDAT’s visitors will now have the opportunity to see even more flora and fauna with this area being fenced to protect local birdlife including nesting sites of bower birds and flora such as the Boab trees that struggle to germinate as the cattle love to eat the new seedlings
